9 years agoThu Aug 06 2015, 04:05amLevel 1Hello all!
First off, I'm a huge fan of the P40, love the looks, love the way it flys.. so I decided to do a skin and I need some opinions.
The template is old made by 1.jaVA_Serval. I'm reworking everything, the only original aspects left is the weathering and
internals for the most part. Which brings me to a couple questions: 1. Is there a more modern weathering template available for
the P-40 (as I pretty much suck at weathering)? 2. If not, and good tips/tricks on proper weathering? Thanks for looking.

Main AdminLooking good Blue Devil, i will have a look at my P40 template, perhaps i can send you some layers for dirt and weathering - give me some days until the next weekend.
At a first glance i recommend to reduce the saturation of the red colour of the spinner, to make it a little bit more realistic. For my taste the dirt of the wing guns is kind of overdone.

AdminHi BlueDevil and welcome to the hanger, it's good to see skins for the mod K being made.
Looking at those two pics you've posted some things come to mind...
1) IIRC Serval's template has the fuel cap on both sides of the fuselage (that round cap just below the trailing edge of the canopy) however it should be on the port side only.
2) I agree with Boelcke that the red spinner could do with being a less intense and slightly lighter shade of red.
3) The green used on that perspex covered scalloped area behind the cockpit is too light, I assume it's interior green. However on P-40s that area was painted whatever the upper surface colour was, e.g if the aircraft was Olive Drab then that area would be as well. There were exceptions of course and I think that these Ks wearing a non standard unit/field applied scheme over the top of the original paint are amongst those. Long story short I believe it should be OD rather than interior green.
4) This last point is purely subjective but I'll put it out there for you to think about. Basically, I wonder if that tan colour is a tad too pink/salmon? Below is a LIFE photo which I base my point on, although I fully admit that the photo is quite pale and faded and so could well be misleading.
Hope this helps. Cheers,

9 years agoLevel 1Thanks! And thanks for the pointers friend, much appreciated!
For the Green zinchromate and Desert tan I base on the photo below. I guesstimated. The Desert Tan has caused a lot of debate.
My belief is, when brand new it resembles sand, but after flying and weather for a month in the desert, probably faded to a pinkish
hue. These 'K" models I believe were painted on route to Africa. Either on the ship, or the first port of call When they were offloaded.
Again I apreciate the pointers

Main Adminthx Harry for jumping in, you?re more expert concerning the P 40 than me
just a hint concerning the red colour of the spinner, it?s just a little detail but ...
try to adjust the colour of the spinner that it matches the red from the tail fin flash
like you said, the pinkish sand camouflage was the result of the weather conditions in North Africa, when the original sand colour faded to a more pink appearance - perhaps you can play a little bit around with also reducing the saturation of this colour? -
9 years agoLevel 1Toned down the colour a tad.
