Main AdminThanks Mick, certainly a fantastic restoration.

AdminHere're some more photos. The first two a general and the third is a lot of detail pics of the cockpit.

I must admit that the photos of this aircraft threw me... it's called a Vb yet it has c wings! I searched the Spitfire production site and it does state that BL628 was produced as a Vb and served with 401 Sqn RCAF (hence the YO code) but in June '43 it was converted to a Seafire... which may or may not explain why c wings are fitted (the current ones are new and were fitted during an earlier restoration phase in Australia) and why the outer cannon stubs have been removed. 'tis a mystery! -
Level 3Sadly yet another "restoration" which is nothing of the sort. More of a "recreation", A BOB wanabee rather than a true restoration of an historic aircraft, who's real history is now lost.

Main AdminI think you misread the article, she is a Vb.

Anyhow, I just found this which answers the riddle of the wings. Basically she was built as a B but due to circumstances they were obliged to use C wings for the restoration.
"The fuselage came to Australia in 1996, still with a lot of work to be done. The wings were always going to be a real challenge. a port Seafire XV outer wing was stripped for everything usable, and a lot was usable in the Mk Vb wing; however, the wing had been outside for a lot of years and a lot was throw-away pattern-only parts. A mixture of Mk Vc and VIII wing parts were available, but there were no usable spars or leading edge skins which on the Spitfire is a rigid "D"-section leading edge. It was decided to have Airframe Assemblies on the Isle of Wight build a set of left and right D-sections, with reconditioned parts where available supplied by us to be incorporated. This included all landing gear attach parts, cannon front mounts, and machine gun blast tubes, wingtip fittings, etc. It was also decided to purchase new manufacture aft-of-spar ribs and flap "kits" from Airframe Assemblies also."

Level 3O.K. HB, a bit harsh as you say but as your research points up this AC is a modern hybrid. We can admire the work that has gone into her but she is a recreation, an assemblage of parts some of which flew in WWII but many of which are modern replicas. Its a matter of authenticity. Is the famous axe George Washington used to cut down the Cherry tree still the same axe after its haft and blade have been replaced during restoration?

9 years agoFri Oct 31 2014, 06:02amAdminFair enough, I see your point although we obviously have quite different personal preferences of what constitutes a 'restoration' versus a 'recreation' . To me she's a restoration (even if not an entirely accurate one) that used some modern replications in order to restore her to flyable condition.
I guess I feel that any project such as this one can be considered a restoration so long as the base of the project and a reasonable amount (a vague description, I know) of parts used are original. If the modern bits are crafted to look and perform at or near original spec then that, to me, doesn't detract from the planes authenticity. If we were to take your argument to it's logical (ableit extreme) conclusion then arguably there are no restorations flying today... at some point many parts need to be replaced with modern reproductions, e.g. perishables such as tyres and other rubber parts, and of course the use of modern radios.
Cheers,
HB -
AdminThere are quite a few original parts in her. It's still far better than 'dataplate' restorations.
I think even 'recreations' have a place in warbirding. The B-17 "Champaign Lady" restoration project is going to be almost completely new-build. Does that make it any less worthy of a project? Not in my opinion, especially since it's being done so it can FLY. -
Level 3It's a matter of authenticity. New-build replicas are superb for showing the public how rare, or long lost, planes look in the sky.The stunning Me 262 replicas are a fine example of this as were, many years ago, the replicas built for "those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines". They have the added advantage of reducing the risk, through use, to rare original aircraft. Nor do I object to the replacement of tyres, engine seals, gaskets and other components that would naturaly be replaced during an aircrafts working life.
I do however object to "restorations" which seek to add a spurious glamour to a (fragmentry) airframe by over-restoring it then painting it to represent a plane flown by an "ace" or in the markings of a squadron in which it never served. To me this demeans both the original aircraft and the pilot(s) who actualy flew it.
