SAAF, NA-88 AT-6 Harvard MkIIa, 4Pack

By Rudi Jaeger, 08 APRIL 2010, from original template.

These skins were done by request, and are based upon an actual Harvards of the South African Air Force.

They are designed specifically for the T-6 Texan 'stand-in' available at SAS1946, although they will work equally as well with the stock SBD-5. The only difference being the fake shadow on the upper fuselage for the Texan's ADF fooball.

Background:

The genesis of the Harvard begins with a 1934 contract for a primary trainer to meet a USAAC requirement. This aircraft was produced in several variants, with several powerplants ranging from 400 to 600hp. In 1937 the addition of retractable undercarriage, a P&W R-1340 powerplant and some other refinements to the airframe produced a recohnisable Harvard. In the following years, development continued with the replacement of fabric with metal, and other refinements. More than 15,000 were eventually built in the US or under license in Australia, Canada, Japan, the Netherlands and Sweden.

The South African Air Force was by far and away the largest user of the Harvard outside the UK and Canada and the SAAF used them for far longer than any other nation.

The first Harvards arrived in South Africa in October 1942 for use by the Joint Air Training Scheme schools. By July 1944, 633 Harvard Mk IIA and III aircraft had been shipped to South Africa, with 555 surviving in October 1945 (379 MkIIAs and 176 Mk IIIs).

As the Harvards had been supplied on lend-leaseby the US, 300 were shipped back to the UK from 1946, with the remainder being purchased by South Africa.

65 AT-6Ds (7634 to 7698) and 30 T-6Gs (7699 to 7728) were purchased from the USA during 1952-1956.

"Brother can you spare a dime":

I've been creating skins for 'IL2' for a few years now, and have never asked compensation for my work.. but if you like what you see, and would care to support a very worthy cause; please visit the website for The National Museum of World II Aviation, in Colorado Springs, to learn the many ways you may contribute. And if you can't contribute, that's okay too; but please show your support by visiting. Thanks.

A humble request:

PLEASE; You have downloaded these skins "free of charge" with my compliments. I only ask, that if you wish to alter them in any way, that they remain solely for your own use, and you agree not to redistribute them. I have no objections to the FREE (as in NOT payware) distribution of campaigns which include my unaltered skins, that's why I made them..but please do not rename the files without consulting me, or upload them to any other site. If you wish to credit my work, that would be nice, although my signature is on every skin. I hope you will enjoy this rendering. Several hours of pixel shifting and research were involved, and it's a pleasure to share with you. If you ever have any questions, please contact me via pm. Thank you and happy flights. ~ R.J.
